Prevents scope mounts from loosening due to vibration and transmits less vibration to the shooter. Here are some stats with different pellets: .22 caliber:
11.9-grain lead pellet = 985 fps (26.61 ft-lbs)
14.5-grain lead pellet = 911 fps (26.46 ft-lbs)

.25 caliber:
17.0-grain lead pellet = 766 fps (22.13 ft-lbs)
27.0-grain lead pellet = 651 fps (25.38 ft-lbs)
31.0-grain lead pellet = 607 fps (25.34 ft-lbs)
